Winky Lux
Yes I had to go for the dog head lipstick kit, look how cute!
Why Hello Beauty Bats!
Have you been wondering what's that brand with the not Sugarpill Lipstick Pills? Well I have, so curiosity got me & I had to give them a try. (Okay so I'm also a sucker for floral & that silly dog bag, hush.) First let's take a look at what I've been trying & at the end take a look at how these two similar "lipstick pills" compare because, well curiosity.
The Basics: Winky Lux was founded in 2015, in NYC, is a Cruelty Free
Glitzed Lip is a gloss, & turned out surprising becoming over my natural lips, but it is one of those gooey formulas, you can probably figure out the rest.
Matte Lip Velour Lipsticks go on pretty opaque, which I always appreciate & they do seam to be moisturizing compared to other traditional lipsticks, but I still put a bit of balm underneath. I found these very comfortable to wear with an eggshell matte appearance. Like other sticks they have some transfer-ability so I personally do not plan on wearing these if heading out for cocktails as I know I'm already clumsy, impaired, it will be all over my face with no faking class.
However, their comfortable formula & appearance with out needing a liner makes them an option when I'm pretending I'm a fancy lady.
Holographic Highlighter (top of swatches below) swatches pretty well, but I found it did not apply like I wanted it too. It has a night blue/pink white ethereal glow to it with out a sparkle which is nice, but may just take some working with or layered differently than I tend to use my highlighters.
The shadows from the Smitten Kitten have some delightful application. They go on pretty creamy, pigmented and blendable, some more than others, but all still easy to use, just maybe start lightly. I've had this palette a little while now and I keep going in for some Spark and Meet Cute, these shads have a beautiful golden glow to them that seams to blend or glow through other shadows when layered.
Now onto my made-up doodle look:
As above so below I used my usual foundation (Oh & look I think I got a slight tan camping, pretend I'm hardcore and never leave my bat cave. Never.) then the rest is essentially a full face using the Smitten Kitten Palette besides some mascara, black & white liquid liners. I like Stila's Stay All Day in Snow because you can very how opaque a bit & an be layered.
Using just a light touch of Date Night to contour, blending in with a light hand Eye Candy for blush before starting randomly sketching out a "Get Lucky" line around my eye with a angled contour brush, before using a curved shadow brush with Eye Candy for the blossoms & blooms. Spark went over for some highlight that pops as I turned my head. Date Night makes a great shadow and defining color.
With Get Lucky still on the angled brush I started on the inside of my brows out before finishing them with my usual brow pomade. (Date Night probably would have worked fine, but this was a bit of a doodle & initially had not set out to do a full face with just the one palette.)
To start my eyes I began with Spark under my brown bone and over a bit. Eye Candy from crease out, up & away. XOXO went over my lids blending up before brushing it down my nose for and at my temples for contour with a slight hue. Date Night was then layered over my crease on my eyes & under my water line, blending it down, out, to the side. XOXO was also used to blend out my bottom line. Get Lucky was blended in at the corners by my nose. A touch of Meet Cute over the center of my lids. Finished off with Smashbox liner & mascara before trying out the lippies!
I do suggest checking out Winky Lux's site if you're interested as they had some colors I had no idea about just seeing them at other stores, their site is: https://www.winkylux.com/
There is no question that Winky Lux Lipstick packaging resembles Sugarpill's Pretty Poison or is it the other way around? Both come in pill shaped capsules, which is unique compared to the big wide world beauty market so it got my curiosity going. Winky Lux was launched & announced with images of their "Pills" in 2015, & Sugarpill founded in 2010, came out with their Pretty Poison Lipsticks, launching them in late 2016. So, how do they compare? First off the feel is totally different, Sugarpill's is heavier and feels much more substantial. There is also a flattened bottom so Sugarpill's lipsticks can be stood up, and gives a place for the lipstick name to be. Winky Lux can not be stood up, and are prone to rolling, are much lighter in weight, and there is no way to see the color from the outside. You have to open it to see the color, so if you have more than one this gets real annoying, real quick.
The two brands have their differences though, identities, shades and their formulas are different but I found it odd these two packagings are so similar & no one else had mentioned or posted a comparison. I've been a long time Sugarpill user, so I knew of their lipsticks before I noticed Winky Lux. If I had to choose one... well luckily we don't have to, there's enough beauty to go around. Besides, it's not just the packaging that counts, but formulas & companies, you may prefer one over the other, & that's cool, but what's great is I haven't seen any negative comments between either of these brands, & I think that speaks positively of them both. Take a look at my entry on Sugarpill's Pretty Poison Lipsticks.
Sidenote: Sugarpill and "pill" packaging makes sense, I'm still totally lost as to why Winky Lux chose to use a "pill" shape. Unless all their floral packaging really is a lot darker than we think, muahahahahah!
